Photo Friday: The Leaning Tower of Pisa
These photos were taken last weekend during a stopover in Pisa before catching a plane back home. It is amazing the beautiful things you see just passing by. I know Pisa quite well as I spent two years there while I was doing my degree, but my son had not seen the leaning tower yet so we decided to stop there for the night. We stayed in a charming hotel in the historical centre, about 50 m from the river Arno at walking distance from Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracles Square). Pisa is a University town with an amazing square of Medieval art. Partly paved and partly grassed, Piazza dei Miracoli is always busy with people taking photographs of the leaning tower. After a period of closure the leaning tower is open again to tourists who wish to climb up to the top and enjoy the view. Superstitious students restrain from climbing the tower until they have completed their degree. According to an urban legend students who climb the tower before completing their studies will never graduate.
The leaning tower is Pisa’s most famous landmark, but the Basilica, Camposanto and the Baptistery – my personal favourite -are equally stunning and together make a unique site.
This post is part of Photo Friday hosted by Debbie at Delicious Baby.
My daughter (then 7) really enjoyed seeing the leaning tower and played around with her camera at odd angles. Must be one of the world’s favourite photo spots.
Looks like you had fab weather to boot!
Stunning indeed. The tower may be leaning, but it looks like they keep it in great condition. Thanks for bringing this world wonder to our attention today – terrific shots!
Fun to hear the urban legend associated with this great site, too
The second building is such an interesting building. I would love to see the inside of it.
I’ve been all over Italy but never to Pisa. What a great description — now I want to go.
