With spring is in the air, the first thing I want to do is to put away those warm socks and with little feet getting bigger every season there is definitely no point in keeping them for next winter. This week-end we spared some of my son’s socks the grim future of becoming dusters and turned them into funny puppets instead.

Making new things out of used material always gives me a rewarding feeling especially if they result into something fun. In the evening my husband and I were treated to a puppet show with the characters we made in the afternoon.

To make our puppets we use two pairs of knee high socks, old buttons, felt cuttings, glue, scissors, pink ribbon, fabric markers and a lot of imagination.

Male puppet: the eyes are made with 4 buttons, two white ones with two smaller dark ones on top to make the iris. The nose is a piece of bundled felt with another button glued on. To use all those buttons my son had the idea to give his male puppet a hat made of buttons. Then he used fabric markers to draw the mouth and beard.

The snake puppet: this was entirely made by my 6 year old who came up with the idea. He took one dark blue sock and glued on two ominous snake eyes made of red felt and a forked tongue. To give the idea of a poisonous snake he cut some strips of red felt and attached it with glue all around the sock. Finally he cut a crown of green felt to seat at the top and decorated with blue glitter glue.

Girl puppet: to make the girl puppet we glued two white buttons to make the eyes; the button had still some blue thread in the holes, which makes them look like blue eyes. For the rest we used only felt cuttings and a piece of pink ribbon. The nose is a triangle of green felt, the lips have been cut out of red felt and we made the blond hair with strips of yellow felt stapled together at the top. We glued the yellow felt at the top of the sock with a pink ribbon in the middle.
