Learn through play: read the book, grow the vegetables and cook the food

Submitted by on May 16, 2011 – 2:35 amNo Comment

I have recently come across some fabulous activity books by The Secret Seed Society that encourage healthy eating  by getting children hands on to grow their own vegetables.  These books are beautifully illustrated and have characters such as Rudi Radish, Tommy P.Tato and Peter Parsnip who go about their daily life. Every book contains a story, the instructions for growing the seeds and some fun recipes for cooking the food.  Not only these activities are hugely popular with kids who love planting and cooking, but the stories put vegetables in a different light and suddenly they become fun characters rather than something left on the plate uneaten. As well as the books, The Secret Seed Society has an interactive area on the website for the Seed Agents Club, where kids can register and take part in the challenges as well as sending pictures of the vegetables they have grown. All agents are given a special certificate with the child’s name and the main mission points that include finding out where food comes from, tasting new food, helping to grow and cook the food, choose food that is good for them, those who produce it and the world as well as share the findings with the other agent friends. There are 4 books so far and I hope to see more in the future.
