How to make a dragon puppet

Submitted by on July 14, 2011 – 3:24 am4 Comments

We are very proud of the way this dragon puppet turned out. It took a little bit of work and fine tuning but in the end we managed to put it all together into a functioning puppet.

To make this dragon puppet you need cardboard, a scalpel, thread, thick string, scissors, acrylic paint, paint brushes and two wooden sticks.

1. Cut 5 circles decreasing in size out of cardboard and cut a hole in the middle to feed the string that will hold them all in a line.

2. Paint them with a pattern of your choice; we chose to paint a star with red and blue acrylics.

3. Draw the face of a dragon on a piece of cardboard; cut it out and paint it.

4. Connect the dragon’s face and the circles together by feeding the thick string through the holes in the middle.

5. Make a few small holes on the top part of the dragon face to feed the thread through.

6. Make the same small hole on each of the circles.

7. Feed the thread through the holes and tie it at the top to a stick that will help you move your puppet. Use two sticks, a smaller one for the dragon’s head and a larger bar for the circles that make up the body.

Make sure the pieces of thread used to handle the puppet are all of similar length for better control.
