Going to Lisbon with kids
Latin countries are renowned to be good destinations to travel with kids. Spain, Portugal and Italy are family oriented countries so children are naturally welcome everywhere. It is not unusual for kids to be out on week-end evenings and during summer until late with their parents, restaurants welcome them and you don’t feel out of place going out to dinner with your young children. Most places even have gardens with facilities to keep them entertained. I went to Lisbon in my younger days and I have great memories of the city so I am planning to return for a family city break. One thing I remember is the beautiful panorama from the terraces all over the city, although there was a lot of uphill walking to be done and with a six year old we will need to be super organised. I find the best way to tackle a city is by breaking the sightseeing with fun activities so I have been on the lookout for fun stuff in Lisbon and it looks like there is plenty to do.
My little one has developed a passion for the stars recently so a visit to the Planetarium is at the top of our list followed by the Aquarium and the Zoo. The Aquarium (Ocenarium) runs sleep over events where families go to sleep with sharks…almost. Older kids will enjoy the weekly Maths games at the Lisbon Science Museum while children of all ages will have lots of fun exploring the cloister garden at Jeronimus Monastery. Belem is a good area of Lisbon to visit with kids, no uphill stretches and a lot to see; the Tower of Belem is a fantastic place that children will enjoy, if you can handle the many questions that will undoubtedly arise. After sightseeing in the area, the big park is perfect for a picnic and a little rest.
