Monday Craft: how to use old fabric and socks to make new things

crafts-cushion

We like crafts at our house, so yesterday my son and I made a little cushion out of an old shirt. It was very easy and the end result was better than I expected. I am not really the sewing type and I wouldn’t know the first thing about handling a sewing machine, but I can manage the basics of hand stitching although the stitches could not be defined as fine craftsmanship I think I did pretty well.

After deciding we were going to make a fish shaped cushion, we drew the pattern directly on the fabric and cut the shape. Then I hand stitched all around it leaving a gap to insert the stuffing for which we used old socks and the remaining shirt’s fabric.

Once satisfied with the amount of stuffing, I completed the stitching and Luca decorated the cushion with fabric art markers. It only took a little over an hour and it’d probably be much quicker to use a sewing machine, but it was fun to make something together out of old stuff and to come up with a special new cushion.

fish-cushionI have mentioned before how taken my son is with the large art attacks by Neil Buchanan, the creator of the TV show Art Attack, so he didn’t miss this opportunity to create his own marine environment with the brand new fish, which he laid on my blue yoga mat and for which he added a friend: an octopus made with a Barbapapa balloon and markers as tentacles; the buttons lined up from the fish make up the water bubbles.

Hi Fabmums, we follow you on twitter and saw your question about what to do with spare socks and old tops. If the socks aren’t in too bad of shape (usually the ones with a missing partner) I like to make sock puppets out of them. Along with fabric pens you can use basic craft supplies like felt, feathers and sequins to add flair. If the socks aren’t puppet worthy we recommend adding them to your cleaning supplies. I slip one on my hand when I’m using furniture polish. Makes polishing go faster!
