Original Advent Calendars
I have had a good look around for advent calendars, not to buy one as this year I will make my own but for original ideas and I was amazed at how many options are out there. My favourite advent calendars are those you can fill with treats and reuse every year for a nice little tradition to have with your kids. My favourite three calendars are from Not on the High Street; the advent calendar sack is double the fun as it is also a presents sack featuring 24 little pockets filled with hidden Christmas tree decorations. The countdown to Christmas is made more exciting as everyday there will be a new decoration to hang on the tree and then on Christmas day the kids will wake up to a sack full of presents. I think this is a fabulous idea and definitely worth its money (£35). The other pick is quite unusual and rather stylish, a garland of leather look stockings for each of the advent days that can be filled with any treats you choose. I like the look of the booties that can be hang anywhere in the house as a decoration too. Finally the advent buckets really caught my eye; they would look equally great on the fireplace or on the window sill as they would hang on the ribbon they are all threaded to. I like their rusty look and the fact that each come with its own numbered peg.
The Great Little Trading Co has some good options and at a good price as they offer 40% off on all advent calendars. There I picked the advent calendar organiser, a charming cardboard house with reversible drawers for each day of the countdown to Christmas to fill with little treats. After the holidays kids will have fun reversing the drawers giving the house a complete new look. It looks like little buckets are in fashion this Christmas because I found another original approach to advent calendars in the Advent Calendar Pails, 24 mini buckets made of metal and numbered. They would look great stacked on the mantelpiece or hanged individually on the tree or even hide them around the house for a treasure hunt.
Love these – so much nicer to have something that lasts for years, and isn\’t covered with cartoon characters! Lakeland do a nice wooden train, and there\’s a gorgeous design to make (the next time you have a couple of hours spare, say 2020…) in Ros Badger and Elspeth Thompson\’s book, Homemade: Gorgeous Things to Make with Love. Thank goodness my mother bought us a Noah\’s Ark Advent a couple of years ago. Biblical, even if not the right bit of the bible!
angelsandurchinsblog – Noah’s Ark sounds great. This year we are making our own felt calendar…we like our crafts so I decided to get creative by doing a little project over the weekend. I will feature it on my monday crafts post…at least that’s the plan
