Green Eggs and Ham and Cat in the Hat are two of my son’s favourite books and mine too. Dr Seuss books have helped many generations learning to read since the 1950s. The rhyme, rhythm and repetition make them easier to read and help to build confidence. Dr Seuss’ books are made of the so called sight words, high-frequency words that make up 50% to 70% of English text. These are about 200-300 words like articles, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and common verb. Children will need to recognise them instantly in order to learn to read fluently and effectively, and given the nature of the sight words there are no picture cues or easy to understand definitions to learn the majority of these words. Furthermore many high frequency words are also phonically irregular. Dr Seuss makes these words fun and memorable thanks to the rhyme, the repetition and the creative drawings that accompany them.
