Monday Crafts: Homemade Spelling Game
Today’s craft is not our usual recycled craft, it is a game that I made for spelling words in a fun playful environment with more than one child playing. I drew the board out with simple images of animals, fruit and everyday objects and gave the background a wash using three different colours to mark the direction. To play all you need is a dice and small pieces to represent each of the players who move around the board spelling the words they land on. We play with a star chart; for every correct answer each child receives a star. Along the way there are hurdles such as moving back some places should players fail to spell the name correctly, but also rewards to move forward after a correct answer.
We have played this game a lot and find it is a lot of fun so I have made a PDF version for any of you who may want to print it and play it with your kids. The game can be easily adapted to young children by changing the spelling to naming of the images – and possibly avoiding the Go Back to Start option!
This is the first of a series of printable games I will soon make available under Elefante A Pois (which is Italian for Polka-Dotted Elephant).

Oh Maria, what a clever game! Wow! love it
We are still too small for spelling, but it would still be fun to move around the board and say what each picture is! And what you do with it (e.g. does it make a sound or do you eat it?)
Lovely. Very special.
Maggy
Hi Maggy, you can just adapt it to your needs. I think for little ones it would be nice to name the words and make the sound or in the case of the fruit they could say what colour it is – eating it is a good idea, I didn’t think of that!
What a great game idea, and because it\’s a game I am sure the kid don\’t even realize how much the are learning
Grreat game and fab to have a printable version – thanks! And thanks for sharing this with the Play Academy. Hope you’ll stop by this Friday too. Cathy
Thanks for idea and printable. Saved Will be printed as soon as I buy some cartriges 😉
Thank you!!
