We recently finished reading Luca’s first long story book, The BFG by Roald Dahl and it was a success. At first I was unsure as I thought it might be a little too early to tackle 200 pages as 5 year olds loose interest very quickly, instead it was fun to wait for the next chapter every night.
I enjoyed the book with him as I didn’t know the story. The language used is fine for a 5 year old, I only had to explain the occasional new expression and certain made up words as the Big Friendly Giant speaks in a funny way and his English is not always correct.
At some point I started to correct the Giant’s mistakes because the made up words were breaking the story and it was difficult to explain the point to a young kid.
The few images are enough to illustrate the story without drawing the attention away from the written words.
It was a good introduction to reading a book in chapters, but now we’ll take a break and read smaller stories before our next proper book.
I like to think that Luca will read The BFG again when he’s older and will be able to get all of it.
